Last week we reviewed the reading strategy called "Tryin' Lion." This strategy tells us to try reading the sentence again or to try a word that makes sense and looks right. We use picture clues and the look of the word (beginning, middle, ending sounds). At the same time we can think about what we already know about the topic we are reading to ask ourselves if it would makes sense to us to have this word in the sentence. For example, if we are reading a text about fleas, it would make sense if the unknown word we are trying to decode is "jumpers" if we see a jumping flea in the picture, and we see the beginning, middle and ending sounds we hear when we say the word "jumpers." Finally, if it makes sense to us because we already know that fleas are great jumpers, then our brain tells us that it looks right, sounds right and makes sense for the word to be "jumpers."
